The Dallas Cowboys picked up Ohio State running back Ezekiel Elliot as the fourth overall choice in the 2016 NFL Draft.
“We think he’s a damn good football player,” says Coach Jason Garrett.
“What he does is unique for coming out of college these days,” he explains.
Coach Garrett calls Elliott an outstanding receiver & blocker, but also praises his off-the-field persona.
“He’s an outstanding person, great character as a guy, great football character,” he says. “There’s just a lot to like about him… He’s a cornerstone type guy you want to build your team around.”
“We, of course, are happy with our pick,” echoes owner Jerry Jones. “This is a big deal, you get a running back of this caliber.”
Jones compared Elliott’s skills to those of star Cowboy RB Emmitt Smith. He says having Elliott on the team will help the defense as much as it does the offense.
“He has, for a big man, real burst,” Jones says “He has a gear when he sees the hole. He’s got lateral skills. Those combinations of things will compliment and fit what we’re all about.
Jones says Elliott should also help protect quarterback Tony Romo.
“He brings a dimension for Tony that should make us all sleep better.”
So who’s next for the Cowboys in the 2016 Draft?
“We’re always looking for players that fit what we want to get done,” says Cowboys VP & CEO Stephen Jones. “We wouldn’t rule out anything.”
We could see the Cowboys pick up a defensive player or even a backup quarterback.
