The Yale community is remembering the former president today. He actually invited the Yale baseball team to Maine just two summers ago.
Before he wore the title as President, George Herbert Walker Bush was Captain and starting first baseman for the Yale Bulldogs.
“He was part of the first two teams that played in the college world series in 1947 and ’48 and he was a starting first baseman”, says Steve Conn, Associate Athletic Director.
Steve Conn is Yale University’s Director of Sport Publicity. He says Bush played in the first two College World Series, and even met baseball legend Babe Ruth right on Yale Field.

“(It’s) hard to imagine a presentation of a book could be such an iconic photo, right?”
While in New Haven, the Bushes welcomed their first son and future president, George Walker Bush.
He earned his economics degree in just 3 years and eventually moved to Texas.
An avid sportsfan, the 41st president followed the Yale Bulldogs, and the school even named a leadership award in his honor where these pictures hang.
In the Summer of 2017, Bush invited the baseball team to his family compound in Kennebunkport, Maine.
“After the Yale Baseball team did something that no Yale Baseball team had done which was win two NCAA tournament games since George Bush was playing”, Conn added.
Back in those days he said Barbara even helped the team keep score.
“That was fun to hear her talk about him and how he was a better fielder than hitter. Some of the things that we had heard, but it’s fun to hear from them.He’s always just been close to Yale athletics and a lot of people in the athletic department got to know him.”
Even though he spent just three years here in New Haven, it proved why he was always a Yale Bulldogs fan.
