LUBBOCK, Texas – No. 10 Texas Tech completed its fourth-straight weekend series sweep Sunday afternoon as the Red Raiders downed San Diego State, 7-2, at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
The victory pushed Tech’s winning streak to nine straight, its longest since the Red Raiders (29-9) recorded 16-consecutive wins from April 13-May 22, 2002. Tech has also won each of its last 12 games at home.
The Red Raiders jumped on San Diego State (10-23) early for the second-straight day, plating a pair of runs in the second inning before adding two more in the third for an early 4-0 lead. Tech is now 20-3 this season when scoring the first run of the game.
Tech’s early advantage was a result of several key two-out hits as Tyler Floyd drove in the first run on the afternoon with a RBI single in the second while Michael Davis followed with a two-run single an inning later.
Floyd, who also scored in the second off a balk, and Davis both finished 2-for-3 overall to help lead a Red Raider offense that outscored San Diego State, 20-3, over the series. The multi-hit game was the fourth of the season for Floyd.
It was the 16th multi-hit performance of the season for Davis, meanwhile, which is tied with Tanner Gardner for the team high after Gardner finished 3-for-4 overall with a RBI. Davis has now recorded at least one RBI in eight of the past nine games as he has driven in 17 runs during that span.
Gardner and Stephen Smith combined for six of Tech’s 11 hits in the win as Smith was also 3-for-4 on the day for his third multi-hit performance of the series. Smith compiled a .615 average (8-for-13) against the Aztecs with a pair of doubles, a home run and a team-leading six RBI.
The early production at the plate benefited a Tech pitching staff that failed to allow a hit until Andrew Brown led off the fifth inning with a double to the gap in right center. San Diego State totaled just three hits overall, two of which that came off the bat of Brown.
The Aztecs scored their only two runs in the fifth inning, cutting Tech’s lead to 5-2 before Ryan Moseley entered out of the bullpen to toss 3.1 shutout innings of relief. The performance earned Moseley (4-2) the win as the right-hander failed to surrender a hit and induced eight ground ball outs.
Dalton Brown tossed a scoreless top of the ninth to close out the win. Brown was the third and final reliever for the Red Raiders as Robert Dugger also tossed 1.2 innings in relief of starter Ty Harpenau, who went three innings in his eighth start of the season.
San Diego State starter Cody Thompson (1-6) suffered the loss after surrendering four runs off eight hits and two strikeouts over three innings. Chris Collins also gave up two runs in four complete innings of relief while Brian Heldman allowed a run in his only inning of work.
The Red Raiders, who placed their leadoff hitter on base in six of eight innings, padded their lead late off a Tyler Neslony sacrifice fly in the seventh and a Trey Ochoa RBI fielder’s choice in the eighth.
Tech concludes its seven-game stretch against non-conference opponents Tuesday and Wednesday when the Red Raiders travel for a two-game midweek series at New Mexico. The series gets underway with a 7 p.m. CT first pitch Tuesday night in Albuquerque.
