Friday afternoon No. 23 Texas Tech opened the Houston Shriner’s College Classic on the right foot, knocking off No. 9 Houston 3-2.

The Red Raiders (5-1, 0-0 Big 12) trailed the Cougars 1-0 after the first inning, but stormed back to tie the lead in the fourth inning with a solo shot from Tech junior right fielder Stephen Smith to knot it up at 1-1.

Then in the bottom of the sixth inning, Tech junior third baseman Ryan Long hit one through the right side that was good enough for a two-run RBI single, bringing home Gutierrez and Neslony. That gave the Red Raiders a 3-1 lead.

In the top of the eighth inning, Houston (4-1) cut the deficit to 3-2, after Montemayor hit a SAC fly to right field that brought home Julks for the Cougars.

However, in the final frame the Red Raiders held the Cougars to a donut on the board, and Texas Tech defeated No. 9 Houston 3-2.
