Texas Tech uses a four-run third inning to beat New Mexico 7-2 Tuesday at Rip Griffin Park.
Freshman pitcher John Henry Gonzalez gave up a two-run home run to Carl Stajduhar in the first inning but would not allow another run in four innings of work to pick up his second career win.
Michael Davis cut the New Mexico lead in half with a solo homer in the bottom of the first and Texas Tech took the lead for good in the third.
Hunter Hargrove’s bloop single to left center scored Grant Little to tie the game and Connor Beck capped the inning with an RBI single to give the Red Raiders a 5-2 lead.
New Mexico loaded the bases in the eighth inning but freshman John McMillon struck out Andre Gregory to end the inning.
Texas Tech would score two insurance runs in the bottom of the eight on a Ryan Long RBI single and improve to 6-0 at home this season.
“It was actually pretty good for coming off a four-game weekend and coming out on a Tuesday, ” head coach Tim Tadlock said. “I think we have enough guys on our roster that have kind of been through it and understand all games are important and you need to respect the game every time you step on the field.”
The Red Raiders (9-1) now prepare for three games at the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic in Houston.
