LUBBOCK, Texas (February 6, 2016) – Seven members of the Lubbock Christian University Chaparrals had multi-hit performances and Hunter McFall matched a career high with five RBI to lead the Chaparrals to a series sweep over Adams State University with a 20-4 win Saturday afternoon at Hays Field.

The 20 runs came off 20 hits and both are ironically the highest totals since LCU had 23 runs off 23 hits on the exact same day (Feb. 6) a season ago hosting New Mexico Highlands. LCU had nine doubles and 11 extra-base hits. The nine doubles is the highest total by the Chaps since head coach Nathan Blackwood has taken over the program (13th season) and the 11 extra-base hits is the most since Apr. 25, 2015 (vs. Oklahoma Christian).

LCU actually trailed in the game, as starting pitcher Jesse Pintado was only able to go a third of the first inning, and ASU sent eight batters to the plate and knocked in a pair of runs off three hits. ASU starting pitcher Ryan Ferguson was only able to go a third of an inning in his start, as he faced eight batters and surrendered seven runs off four hits. LCU sent 10 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first inning and scored seven runs off five hits. A three-run home run by Hunter McFall and a two run double by Brandon Rix highlighted the inning and LCU led 7-2 after the first inning.

The Chaps bats stayed alive in the second inning. After Brent Bezio struck out the ASU side in the top half of the inning, LCU sent 13 batters to the plate and extended the lead to 15-2 with an eight run inning. The first five batters reached safely with hits and four of the hits were doubles during the second inning scoring bonanza.

Adams State produced a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning, but LCU answered right back with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning. Brent Stewart followed a Jaime Bustamante lead-off double with a two-run home run for a 17-4 lead. They added to the lead with a two-run fifth inning for a 19-4 advantage. The final run came in the seventh inning to close the game’s scoring.

Brett Wilhelm (3-for-4) and Brandon Urquizo (3-for-5) each led LCU with three hits. They also had multi-hit games from Stewart (2-for-3), McFall (2-for-4), Dillon Drury (2-for-3), Chase Simmons (2-for-5) and Bustamante (2-for-4). Along with McFall’s five runs-batted-in, the Chaps received a four-RBI game from Stewart. Drury, Rix, Wilhelm and Bustamante each drove in a pair of runs for LCU.

Chris Morley (2-for-5) and Evan Weidner (2-for-3) led ASU in the loss, which placed the Grizzlies record at 0-3. Ferguson (0-1) suffered the loss. He was one of seven pitchers used by ASU.

Bezio (1-0) registered the win marking the third straight game the win has been registered by a member of the bullpen. He went 5.2 innings and allowed two runs off seven hits and struck out six batters. Collin Fraley, Christian Buatte and Brian Baker combined to pitch the final three innings and combined to allow one hit.

LCU improved to 3-0 with the win. It was their seventh consecutive win all-time over ASU. The Chaps will remain home Tuesday and will host West Texas A&M at 4 p.m.
