Texas Tech right-handed pitcher Davis Martin earned his fourth Freshman All-America honor of the season Tuesday as he was named a first-team selection by Perfect Game.
Martin joins former Red Raider outfielder Barrett Barnes (2010) as the only players in program history to earn Freshman All-America accolades by four different publications. Martin was previously recognized by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) and Baseball America.
Martin was among the top freshmen in the country this season after compiling a 10-1 record to go along with a 2.52 earned-run average over his 19 appearances which included 14 starts. His 10 wins finished tied for the most in the Big 12 Conference as well as tied for the most nationally among freshmen.
The San Angelo native picked up the win in nine of his 14 starts this season after beginning the year in the bullpen. His final win came in Tech’s first ever victory at the College World Series this past Tuesday as he tossed seven shutout innings against No. 1 Florida.
Martin’s 10 wins this season are the most ever for a Red Raider freshman in school history. In addition, he is the first Tech pitcher to reach the 10-win mark since Steve Rowe also collected 10 victories during the 2002 season.
Martin was especially dominant during Big 12 play where he was a perfect 6-0 overall with a 2.00 ERA. League foes hit just .200 against Martin, who allowed just six extra-base hits over his 45.0 complete innings.
Martin was named to the Big 12 first team by the conference coaches following the season as well as to the All-Freshmen Team. He was a unanimous selection to the all-freshmen team.
Martin is one of 14 players in school history to garner Freshman All-America accolades, a list that also includes teammate Steven Gingery who was previously honored by Collegiate Baseball.
