Head Coach Daniel Fontenot is entering his fifth season with the Denver City Mustangs.
After a 6-6 season and 3-2 district record, Denver City isn’t returning any starters from last year. The young team will have to be smarter and more physical if they want to compete for district this year.
“We actually start three seniors on offense and two seniors on defense. We usually start three sophomores and a junior on defense so we are really young, but the kids have really stepped up to the challenge so we are learning as we go,” Fontenot said.
He added most of his players are seeing their first varsity experience this season, but that is not the case for junior quarterback Mathew Delarosa.
He played both receiver and running back for varsity last year.
“It was really hard to get motivated, knowing we don’t have a lot of seniors and we lost a lot of guys…I felt like I had to take on the role as a leader, I never really expected that at all because I never really had to but I’ve caught myself trying to be more of a leader and trying to encourage my teammates more, ” Delarosa said.
The Mustangs are looking to improve to 3-2 on the season as they prepare for Mountain View this Friday.
“When people say rebuilding we are definitely doing that. We are proud of our seniors, their class is definitely small, but the seniors that we have have stepped up and played well- they just have a lot of young ones playing with them,” Fontenot said.
