The Shallowater Mustangs have been a model of consistency over the past couple of years but lost 19 lettermen and coach Kyle Maxfield from last year’s team.
New Head Coach Chad Terry leads the Mustangs in 2016, and Coach Terry is still adjusting to his new team.
“The biggest deal is building relationships with the players there’s a trust factor that comes in when you come in as a coach especially as late as the transition happened but this is a great program a lot of wins taken place here.”
With only two returning starters on offense and three on defense there are plenty of question marks for the Mustangs this season.
Senior tailback Brandon VanAtta wasn’t concerned about the inexperience, “I mean a couple years ago we only had one returning varsity player and what do you know we were a game away from state so i don’t think it’s a big deal for us at all.”
All that aside, Coach Terry couldn’t be happier to get the season underway,
“I’ve been doing it 28 years and it feels like year one you know you still get excited you love getting up early and smelling the cut grass and getting out here with kids and molding young men.”
Shallowater opens up the season this Friday at home against Idalou.
