It’s the question mark that always seems to loom over the Texas Tech football team.

When will they have a serviceable defense that will give their offense a chance to win?

As Texas Tech’s defensive coordinator David Gibbs enters his second season with the Red Raiders, he’s hoping that year is now.

“Obviously when you are bad on defense, you want turnover. You want to change the recruiting, you want to change the mentality, you want to change the attitude of your defense,” Gibbs said.

Well, that’s exactly what he got.

Eighteen new players are a part Gibbs’ 40-man defensive roster, nine of which come up front in the trenches.

Tech has finished near the bottom nationally in run-defense the last two seasons, finishing 126th in 2016 after giving up an average of 279.9 rush yards per game.

However, with the addition of two division one transfers, former Michigan defensive lineman Ondre Pipkins and Notre Dame linebacker Kolin Hill, Gibbs is hoping the two will help change the culture of his unit.
