It’s officially, official. The rumors are no more.

Kliff Kingsbury will return as the Red Raiders head football coach in 2017, but it might not be without some good ole’ fashioned compromise.

Texas Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt didn’t hold any punches back when he described Tech’s defense.

“On defense…we’re not very good,” Hocutt said.

A side of the ball that Hocutt said that Kingsbury will have to have more of an involvement with. However, the reallocation of time, will mean that Kingsbury will likely have to give something up.

Hocutt does expect Kingsbury to remain the primary offensive play-caller on game day. Hocutt said that Kingsbury will have to find a way to put more trust into those he’s hired around him on the offensive side, in order to get things right for the team as a whole.

“He’ll have to lean more on offensive coordinator, or position coaches to fulfill those responsibilities, so he can be more engaged on the defensive side of the ball,” Hocutt said. “We talk about these things, and ultimately he’s responsible, and we both see that defensively, we’ve got to be a better football team, and it’s his responsibility to put a better defensive product out on the field.”
