Last season the Texas Tech offense had nothing to worry about when it came to the running back position, and that was largely due to DeAndre Washington.
Washington led the team with 1,492 rushing yards on 233 carries, coupled with 14 touchdowns. That type of production is hard to replace and the Red Raiders may be counting on multiple players to do so.
One guy who will surely be counted on for production is Justin Stockton, who held the number one spot on the depth chart coming out of spring practice.
The 5’10 192 pound junior had the second most carries amongst running back last season with 61. He turned that into a solid 367 yards and 5 TDs.
One guy who could challenge Stockton for that top spot is Demarcus Felton. The 5’7 sophomore was limited to six carries last season, but one of those carries included a 53 yard touchdown run against Iowa State. With no DeAndre Washington, Felton should see a major increase in touches.
Adding to the depth at running back is redshirt freshman Corey Dauphine. Although his experience is limited he could be a guy the coaches turn to because of his speed. Dauphine also runs track at Tech and could be a burner out of the back field.
Two more players who could factor into the rotation are Senior Quinton White and incoming freshman Da’Leon Ward. White could be asked to take some of the responsibility off the shoulders of Justin Stockton, though he only carried the ball 29 times times last season.
There may not be a true go to guy on the roster, like DeAndre Washington was last season, but with great depth at the position the coaches could turn to a running back by committee system.
