It has been since 1982 that minor league baseball was played in Amarillo, Texas. In 2019, twenty-seven years after the Amarillo Gold Sox left the Panhandle for Beaumont, Double A hardball will return. The Elmore Sports Group owns the franchise which will be moving from San Antonio to Amarillo. During this move, the ownership group’s rookie league team in Helena, Montana will move to Colorado Springs, Colorado and the Triple A team there will move to San Antonio. The City of Amarillo has already broken ground on a multi-million dollar facility in downtown that will house the new team. The Elmore group and the city are in the process of finalizing a thirty year lease. Lubbock was one of the other cities considered for the new minor league team. David Nelson with South Paw Sports Entertainment is hopeful Lubbock will continue to pursue a minor league team moving forward.
