Coronado Head Football Coach Seth Parr said on Saturday that he is proud of how his team responded after getting off to a slow start against Rider in a 42-28 win.
The Mustangs scored only seven points in the first half of Friday’s game, and trailed for much of the contest before exploding for 28 fourth quarter points to seal the victory.
Some of the struggles can be attributed to the loss of running back Jarrod Compton. Parr said on Saturday that Compton suffered a PCL injury, and that he will be off his feet for at least two weeks. He is confident that Compton will be able to heal and come back for Districts.
As for Friday’s game, Parr admitted that his team did not play well early, attributing it to some of the new defensive schemes that Rider threw at them. But for him, any win is sweet.
“Sometimes figuring out how to win a game is just as rewarding as going and dominating in one, dominating a game,” Parr said. “I like dominating a game but at the same time, not every game is going to be like that. We did a good job, we had a big crowd last night, and we could’ve laid an egg, we were on the verge of laying an egg, but you know, we didn’t.”
2-0 Coronado will look to take that fourth quarter momentum into next week, as the Mustangs go on the road and face off against another 2-0 team in Odessa High. That game will start at 7:30 pm.
