Elation might not be a big enough word to describe Lincoln Riley’s emotions as he is named the new head coach of the Oklahoma Sooners after Bob Stoops announces his retirement.

The Muleshoe native and Texas Tech alum is embarking upon a dream situation that began as a student assistant and Kliff Kingsbury’s backup under Mike Leach at Texas Tech back in 2002.   Riley went on to serve as a grad assistant and then wide receivers coach under Leach until 2009.  He then joined former Texas Tech defensive coordinator Ruffin McNeil’s staff at East Carolina as the offensive coordinator.  He served in that capacity for five years until Stoops and Oklahoma came calling.

“Wow.  You know.  What a day.  A day as a young guy and a coach when you decide you want to do this, these are things you just dream about.  And I feel like I’m honestly living a dream right now.  Just an incredible feeling.  I can’t tell just how…The two words that come to mind the most are honored and humbled.”
