LUBBOCK, Texas – Freshman Morgan Hornback produced Tech’s only run of the game as the No. 14/12 Texas Tech softball team dropped its series finale, 13-1, in six innings to No. 2/2 Oklahoma on Sunday.
Hornback scored Tech’s only run on a solo homer to left field while Oklahoma sent four balls out of the park. Hornback and junior Karli Hamilton were the only two Red Raiders to record a hit.
With the loss, the Red Raiders fell to 27-5 overall and 0-3 in Big 12 Conference play. Junior transfer Missy Zoch was issued the loss as she surrendered five runs in 3.1 innings pitched.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Sooners started the game with two consecutive walks and back-to-back singles off Zoch plated one run. Oklahoma tacked on another run one batter later on a sacrifice fly – giving the Sooners a 2-0 advantage.
Hamilton ripped a leadoff double of Giselle Juarez in the bottom of the inning, but she was stranded after a fly out, ground out and strikeout ended the inning.
Four hits and one error gave Oklahoma a four-run lead in the top of the third and, despite a 15-pitch walk to Hamilton and seven-pitch walk to Edwards, the Red Raiders were unable to respond in the bottom of the frame.
After a leadoff double and wild pitch placed a runner on third to start the fourth inning, Tech made a change in the circle and brought out sophomore hurler Erin Edmoundson. The Sooners used a sacrifice fly to bring make it a 5-0 game, but Edmoundson battled back with a strikeout to end the frame.
Freshman Zoe Jones reached on a two-out error in the bottom of the inning, but Tech was unable to capitalize on the opportunity.
Home runs from Oklahoma’s Shay Knighten and Jocelyn Alo put the Sooners up 8-0 in the top of the fifth, but Tech avoided the five-inning run-rule in the bottom frame when Hornback belted a pinch-hit home run on two outs to cut into Oklahoma’s lead, 8-1.
However, a leadoff home run off Edmoundson in the sixth upped Oklahoma’s score once again. Hornback relieved Edmoundson following the home run and a grand slam by Grace Green powered Oklahoma to a commanding 13-1 lead.
Tech was unable to respond in the bottom of the inning and dropped their third Big 12 contest of the season in six innings.
