Another product of Bobby Moegle and the storied Monterey baseball program Mike Gustafson was a two time all district player from 1984 to 1985,
“we had a lot of success in my two years on the varsity we went to the state tournament twice made it to the final four lost in the semis you know it was great I don’t think I would have had the chance to play college baseball had it not been for coach Moegle,” said Gustafson.
To put it lightly coach Moegle was tough on his players but when the time came to move on to the next level Gustafson was already setup to have success,
“at that time so many of the guys that would come out of the Monterey program like the best two or three players every year were getting the chance to go to Tech and LCU and you can go back and look at coach Moegle’s scholarships and the number of guys that did that and I got the opportunity to go to Tech and it was a no brainer.”
Gus would spend four years on the field at tech, one of them under another Monterey legend Gary Ashby.
But it was after his time as a ball player was done where he made his biggest impact bringing the College Baseball Hall of Fame right here to Lubbock,
“I mean it’s kind of amazing to step back and think about what we’ve brought, Robin Ventura and Dave Winfield and Barry Larkin and Lou Brock and people like that to town but also Stephen Strasburg, David Price, and Buster Posey.”
Since 2006 Lubbock has been the destination for the hall of fame, but Gustafson has remained more than involved with Texas Tech baseball watching from the stands and as a broadcaster,
“it’s been a blast to be able see that stuff first hand even see my kid out there jumping in the dog pile and all that I mean that’s really in many respects a dream come true and so I can’t get enough of it I’m ready for it to start.”
