Lady Raiders School Houston on Education Day

More than 5,000 screaming elementary school students were on hand to watch Texas Tech beat Houston, 84-60, at the third annual Education Day.

After a slow start in the first quarter, the Lady Raiders (5-3) posted back to back 20+ point quarter to give Texas Tech a 24-point lead entering the fourth.

Texas Tech shot a season-best 58.5 percent from the field while holding Houston (3-5) to 42.1 percent.

“Houston throws a lot of pressure at you and a lot of different things defensively and I thought we handled it well,” Texas Tech head coach Candi Whitaker said. “I really like how we came out in the third quarter.  I thought on both ends we played that quarter really well and obviously that’s when we were able to pull away.”

The Lady Raiders tallied a season-best 16 steals and tied the season-best 23 forced turnovers against Houston. The last time the Lady Raiders have 15+ steals in a game was on Nov. 21, 2015 when Texas Tech recorded 17 vs. Southeastern Louisiana.

Five Lady Raiders scored double-digit points in Wednesday’s win with junior center Jada Terry leading the way with 16 points. Freshman Arella Guirantes and senior Ivonne CookTaylor followed with 12 points each.

Freshman guard Grayson Bright earned her first career start and tallied a career-high 10 points.

The Lady Raiders return to the court next Wednesday against Central Arkansas.  Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at the United Supermarkets Arena.
