The Lubbock High Lady Westerners are in the regional quarterfinals for the first time in program history, but the team isn’t satisfied.
“There’s a lot of teams that would get satisfied coming this far,” said senior first baseman Adreanna Guerrero. “Especially making history like this, but this just pushes us even more to get to the place where we want to be. In the long run that’s state. That’s where we want to be. And we’re just gonna push each other and our coaches are going to push us more and more to get to exactly where we want.”
“We talk about it all the time even early in the season, don’t be satisified with the practice,” said Head Coach Sherri Culwell. “Yeah, if you win the practice then yeah that’s our ultimate goal, because if you can win practice then you can win the next game. And just keep looking forward. Don’t rest on your laurels and just keep fighting.”
Now the Lady Westerners will face a Randall team that has made the regional quarterfinals three of the past five years. But the team feels ready and is approaching the weekend like a team that’s been here before.
“We’re gonig to apprach it the same way we approach every team,” said senior second baseman Breanna Guerrero. “And we know we’re going to play the best Randall there is, and that’s fine. They’re going to play the best Lubbock High. So we’re just going to take it one step at a time one practice at a time one play at a time and we’re just going to go.”
Part of the success this season has been fueled by the team wanting to prove the perception wrong about Lubbock High athletics.
“We knew it,” said Breanna. “We heard it even here, Chapin actually said that they were going to look past us and we take that personal because, you know it’s us.” “It’s really personal to us because we know what we have and it sucks that a lot of people see us as weak links of like the food chain or whatever,” said Adreanna. Like we’re weaker than every other thing because of the name on our jersey. They don’t look at us as a team. They look at the name and automatically think that we’re not as good as the other girls and we do take it personally to come out here every single day and we work our butts off to show everyone what we have, and we show them that we are the best out here and we prove it over and over and over again.”
