LUBBOCK, Texas (January 9, 2015) – Marcos Schuster scored the entirety of his team-high 14 points in the second half and A.J. Luckey secured his 13 points before halftime for Lubbock Christian University in a 65-58 win over Oklahoma Christian Saturday afternoon inside the Rip Griffin Center to cap a 2-0 week of Heartland play at home.
Marcus Arrington shared LCU scoring honors alongside Schuster with his 14 points and Isaac Cardona added 10 for the Chaps (10-4, 4-2 Heartland). LCU committed a season-low seven turnovers compared to 17 by the Eagles (4-9, 1-4 Heartland) but missed half of their shots from the free throw line (8-of-16) in the victory.
Luckey compiled the Chaps’ first eight points and Matthew Alford added a field goal within the first six minutes before LCU’s offense became stagnant during a four-and-a-half minute scoreless stretch that allowed OC to jump ahead 15-10 with just under nine minutes to go. Arrington brought Chap scoring back to life with a three-pointer from the left wing, a drive in the paint and another three to reverse the lead back to LCU. Isaac Cardona capped the 7-2 spurt for a 23-19 Chap advantage with 6:54 left in the half.
A triple by Luckey from the right wing preceded buckets by Brennen Fowler, Arrington and another by Luckey to hand the Chaps a double-digit lead before OC’s Stephen Amalong hit a three to cut the gap to 33-25 in favor of the Chaps heading into the break.
Schuster opened the second half with a three-pointer from the left side to again give LCU an 11-point advantage, but the Eagles responded with a 13-4 run to cut the margin to 40-38 six-and-a-half minutes in. Back-to-back scores in the paint by Schuster coupled with a strong inside move and a three by Cardona pushed the Chaps in front 49-38.
LCU led by at least seven points until the 3:53 mark when Zach Norris converted a three-point play to pull the Eagles to within five but a Schuster bucket and a baseline jumper by Tyler Rogers extended the lead to 63-54 with just over two minutes remaining. A jump shot by Norris with 30 seconds left made it a five-point game but a pair of free throws by Arrington sealed the win.
The Chaps hit the road to face Rogers State Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
