The Monterey Plainsmen finished last season 5-6. With only three returners on offense, Coach Wayne Hutchinson is preparing for a successful year with the newcomers.

“I think any year you start and you have new kids in different positions and for you to have a successful year, it really depends on your leadership and what your team chemistry is going to be like. I like what I see in that area right now,” Hutchinson said.

One of those new faces will come at the quarterback position.

“We got four quarterbacks that are really good. I have a senior in Jaron Jones and he played receiver last year, but he moved over to quarterback this year,” Hutchinson said.

Jones played four games last season before appendicitis benched him the remainder of the season.

“I didn’t get to play with my friends or brothers so I mean to get back out there is a good experience. It was kind of scary because I ain’t get to play last year but I mean I think I’m ready,” Jones said.

Hutchinson said it’s good to have a veteran defense to help bring momentum and experience.

Corbin Whitfield, a Plainsmen Safety, said they can finally change things up defensively due to depth.

“We can finally do different things now coverage wise and stats wise like that because it’s nice to have experience,” Whitfield said.

The Plainsmen will open up the season against Odessa on August 26.
