The No. 2 Texas Tech baseball team recorded its fourth conference win of the year after a 9-4 victory over No. 15 Oklahoma on Saturday afternoon at L. Dale Mitchell Park.

The Red Raiders (25-5, 4-1) got back in the win column after dropping a 6-2 decision in Friday’s series opener, setting up the rubber match for Sunday’s 11 a.m. finale. Tech put together nine runs on 14 hits, taking full advantage of OU’s five errors. Every inning the Red Raiders scored, they put up at least two runs, while countering every OU scoring frame with one of their own.

Sophomore left-hander Steven Gingery had another masterful outing against Oklahoma on Saturday, improving to 6-0 this season. The Huntington Beach, Calif., native pieced together his second-straight shutout outing, tossing 6.0 innings, while allowing just four hits and one walk. His win put him in a tie for the NCAA lead in victories in 2017.

For the fifth time this season, Gingery racked up at least eight strikeouts, this time notching a season-high 10. In his final inning of work, Gingery rung up three OU hitters, the final two with the bases loaded, raising his season strikeout total to 54.

Another sophomore, outfielder Cody Farhat, had a career day at the plate, racking up four hits to go with three RBI and a run scored. It was a career-high total for hits in a game, his second multi-hit performance of the year, while tying a personal-best three RBI with an April 13 date against Sam Houston State last season.

Junior Orlando Garcia and freshmen Michael Berglund & Grant Little all recorded two hits in Saturday’s win over Oklahoma.

For the second-straight game, the Red Raiders struck first in the top of the third inning. Farhat led off the frame with a single through the left side that was booted by the left fielder, allowing Farhat to slide safely into second. A grounder from Long moved him over and a failed pickoff attempt landed in the OU dugout gave Tech a 1-0 lead.

With the bases clear in the third, Jung was issued a four-pitch walk, bringing up Berglund, who sent a single underneath the left fielder’s glove, allowing Jung to score all the way from first to make it 2-0. OU committed four errors in the frame.

Tech added two more in the top of the sixth, beginning with a leadoff solo homer from junior designated hitter Zach Rheams. It was his first home run of the season and the 20th for the Red Raiders in 2017. After a walk & stolen base by Little, a one-out single from Garcia pushed Little home to make it 4-0.

Oklahoma sliced its deficit in half in the bottom of the seventh after sandwiching a pair of hit-by-pitches with two walks for its first run of the game. OU’s Flansburg grounded into a 4-6-3 double play to plate another to make it 4-2, but that would be all in the frame after a fantastic diving catch on the left field line by freshman Grant Little for the final out of the frame.

Those two runs would be earned by the Red Raiders in the top of the eighth behind an RBI double from Farhat. Tech took advantage of a two-out error by the second baseman, allowing Davis to land on first. A single through the left side by Garcia, who battled back from down 0-2 to a full-count, put two on for Farhat, who laced a double to the left field corner to clear the bases and push the lead back to four at 6-2.

OU answered in the bottom of the frame thanks to a solo home run by Martinez to lead off the eighth. That would be it though, as McMillon followed by retiring the next three hitters to keep it a 6-3 game.

Once again, Tech got the run back in the top of the ninth, adding two more on top it, all with two outs in the frame. Jung began the inning with a single to left field, then a two-out, four-pitch walk to Rheams put two on for Little, who added another single to score Jung for the 7-3 lead. With the bases loaded, Garcia missed on strike three, but a passed ball allowed him to reach first and Sanchez to score, who pinch-ran for Rheams. The Red Raiders tacked on one more run in the frame when Garcia beat a throw to second from the shortstop, negating the third out and allowing Little to cross home for the 9-3 lead.

A single from Flansburg in the bottom of the ninth plated Walbergh, who pinch-hit earlier in the frame and reached on a double, bringing the score to its final resting place at 9-4.

The Red Raiders will wrap up the weekend set with Oklahoma on Sunday, April 2, at 11 a.m.
