Texas Tech softball fell, 15-2, to No. 20 Baylor on Saturday afternoon at Rocky Johnson Field to fall to 23-28 on the season, including a 6-8 mark in Big 12 play.
“I didn’t think we competed as well as we could have today,” head Texas Tech softball coach Adrian Gregory said. “We went to Mattison Maisel again today because that kid has kept us in ballgames all year and Baylor made the adjustments they needed to make. They swing well and they just got the best of her today.”
Baylor jumped out to an early lead combining for four runs on three hits in the top half of the first inning.
Following a three-up, three-down inning from Tech, Baylor added three more runs in the top of the second to bring Texas Tech back to the plate trailing 7-0.
The Red Raiders responded, as Brittany Warnecke roped a leadoff single through the middle, before Susan Welborn brought her in with a two-run homerun to left field. The homer was Welborn’s ninth of the season, and represented the Red Raiders’ 56th long ball in 2016.
The Red Raiders were unable to generate anymore offense in the game, as the Bears scored eight more runs to secure the run-rule victory.
With the loss, the Red Raiders fell to 12-39 all-time against the Bears, including a 4-20 record in Lubbock.
The series will conclude Sunday at noon CT, as the Red Raiders honor the 2016 senior class in what will be the final home game of the season.
“I think that those three kids have been all in,” said Gregory of her senior class. “Since the very beginning when they put on the uniform, they have been all in. They have done everything that we have asked them to do, and they play extremely hard. They are always the dirtiest kids when we leave. They are a part of what we are building here. They are leaving a mark on our younger kids. Our freshman class is going to know how to play the game hard because of how those three kids play.”
