Friday afternoon No. 25 Texas Tech defeated Baylor 5-0 in their Big 12 opener.

It took four innings for either team to get a run across the dish, but in the top of the fourth inning Texas Tech (11-6, 1-0 Big 12) was able to notch the eventual game-winning run.

With two runners on, Tech sophomore outfielder Tanner Gardner hit an RBI single through the left side scoring Tech senior designated hitter Corey Raley to give the Raiders the 1-0 lead.

Then in the top of the fifth inning, Tech senior outfielder Tyler Neslony hit a single to Baylor’s pitcher, and advanced to second on a throwing error, while Tech junior outfielder Stephen Smith scored to give Texas Tech the 2-0 lead.

The Raiders would plate one more run in the top of the eighth inning to give Tech the 3-0 lead.

In the ninth inning Texas Tech would add two more insurance runs off of two hits to build a 5-0 lead, and the Raiders would hold on to pick up their first Big 12 win of the year by that same score.

Texas Tech will continue their three-game series with Baylor (7-10, 0-1 Big 12) in game two on Saturday at 3:05 p.m. CT from Baylor Ballpark in Waco. Game two will be televised on Fox College Sports.
