No. 4 Texas Tech outlasted No. 21 Texas, 2-1, en route to clinching their third-straight series win in Austin.

In the top of the third inning, Tech’s freshman catcher Michael Berglund hit an RBI single to center field that scored Tech freshman third baseman Josh Jung, to give Tech a 2-1 lead, and it proved to be the game winner.

Down the stretch the Tech pitching staff did all the heavy lifting, after getting out of jams in the fifth, seventh and eighth innings. In the seventh, Tech sophomore left handed pitcher Jacob Patterson came on in relief of Tech’s sophomore left Steven Gingery.

After a Patterson throwing error to first on a sac bunt, the Horns put runners on second and third with no outs, but Patterson bounced back with three straight strikeouts to end the frame.

Out of two games this weekend in Austin, the Texas Tech pitching staff has thrown 18 innings, while only allowing six hits, two runs (one of them unearned), and adding 21 strikeouts to just seven walks.

Texas Tech has the opportunity to sweep the Longhorns on Sunday, with first pitch set for 1 p.m. at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
