No. 5 Texas Tech Women’s Tennis Wins Share of Big 12 Title

The No. 5 Texas Tech Women’s Tennis Team clinched a share of the 2017 Big 12 title with a 4-0 win over West Virginia on Sunday afternoon.

This is the women’s tennis program’s third Big 12 Championship in six seasons, all coming under Head Coach Todd Petty.


The Lady Raiders (20-3, 8-0 Big 12) continue their 13-match win streak to stay undefeated in Big 12 play. This is the third straight 20-win season for the Lady Raiders under Petty.

“I am so proud of these young ladies. They have fought for this goal for many years and to see them accomplish it is so rewarding,” Head Coach Todd Petty said.

Tech opened the match with two doubles wins on courts one and three to claim the doubles point. No. 73 Alba Cortina-Pou and Alex Valenstein defeated Sofia Duran and Abigail Rosiello, 6-0, for their sixth straight win. No. 29 Sarah Dvorak and Sabrina Federici clinched the point with a 6-4 win.

In singles action, junior No. 10 Gabriela Talaba defeated West Virginia’s Kaja Mrgole in straight sets (6-0, 6-1) to give the Lady Raiders a 2-0 lead.

Federici was the second to finish with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Sofia Duran on court five, marking her 14th straight win.

Freshman Alba Cortina-Pou clinched the 4-0 sweep for the Lady Raiders win a 6-4, 6-1 win on court six, marking her fifth straight win of the season.

The Lady Raiders is set to play TCU on Saturday in the Big 12 regular season finale. Tech will play for the outright Big 12 title.
