No. 6 Texas Tech Escapes Late Charge from UTSA, 7-6

No. 6 Texas Tech held off a late rally from Texas-San Antonio to defeat the Road Runners 7-6 in game one of the three-game set.

The Red Raiders built a 5-0 lead after the three innings of play, but UTSA used a two-run fourth, and a four-run seventh inning to get back within one run of Texas Tech.

Texas Tech’s junior reliever Jacob Patterson gave up four runs in the top of the seventh to open the flood gates for UTSA. Tech’s second reliever of the inning, junior LHP Parker Mushinski notched a key strikeout for the second out of the inning, and was able to retire the side, with Tech nursing a 7-6 lead.

However in the top of the ninth the drama would continue. Jose Quezada allowed UTSA’s junior catcher Tony Beam to notch a lead-off double with no outs. UTSA tried to bunt their lead runner over to third, but Quezada had the play of the game, by fielding the bunt and punching out the Road Runner at third.

From there Texas Tech would hold on for a 7-6 win over UTSA in game one of the three game series.

Texas Tech will face UTSA in game two on Saturday, March 11 at 2 p.m. at Rip Griffin Park.
