The No. 6 Texas Tech men’s tennis team was handed a 4-0 defeat by No. 5 Wake Forest Sunday at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.

The Red Raiders (15-2) had their 5-match winning streak snapped and fell to 9-2 in matches versus ranked opponents this season. Both of Tech’s losses have come against Top 5 ACC opponents in No. 1 North Carolina and No. 5 Wake Forest (10-3).

“This wasn’t our best day in terms of play, competing and energy level,” Texas Tech head coach Brett Masi said. “When you play a team like Wake Forest, you can’t expect to be able to fight back from a bad start. Basically, we didn’t show up to start the match. We had some hope during a few of the second sets in singles but couldn’t get the job done. Hopefully, this is an experience we will learn from. We have a few weeks to improve and get ready for a tough round of matches.”

Tech began doubles play with a 6-2 victory courtesy of Jolan Cailleau and Connor Curry over Romain Bogaerts and Dennis Uspensky in the No. 3 position. Cailleau and Curry improved their doubles record to 6-4 on the season and have back-to-back matches for the third time on the season.

Wake Forest (10-3) responded and took the doubles point with a pair of 6-4 victories on courts one and two. Petros Chrysochos and John Ho knocked off Tech’s No. 56 Alex Sendegeya and Bjorn Thomson in the No. 2 spot. Then, No. 21 Skander Mansouri and Christian Seraphim upended No. 2 Hugo Dojas and Felipe Soares at the top of the lineup.

The Demon Deacons increased their lead to 2-0 when Usepensky defeated Curry 6-0, 6-2 on court five. Shortly after, Wake Forest notched another point with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph from No. 34 Chrysochos over No. 97 Dojas in the No. 2 spot to make it 3-0.

Texas Tech was handed its first shutout as No. 25 Mansouri defeated No. 18 Soares in an impressive second set comeback. Mansouri was down 5-1 in the second set but churned out six consecutive games to secure a 6-1, 7-5 decision to give the Demon Deacons the 4-0 win.

When play was halted. Tech’s Sendegeya and Thomson were knotted at a set a piece on courts three and six, respectively. Cailleau led Wake Forest’s Ho 7-6 (1), 3-0 in the No. 4 position.

Next up, the Red Raiders will head west for the San Diego Invitational hosted by the University of San Diego. Tech will face Indiana on Monday, March 14 at 2 p.m. CT.
