Today Patrick Mahomes made it official,
“I would like to announce that I will forgo my senior season and declare for the 2017 NFL draft.”
No one was shocked by the news. Patrick Mahomes leaving Lubbock to pursue an opportunity that was too good to turn down.
“It was a really hard decision for me but always being a dream to play professional sports and just the dream of going through college and wanting to be an NFL player is really what drove me to be there,” said Mahomes.
The Texas Tech QB was given a second round draft grade by the NFL draft advisory board but his agent Leigh Steinberg was quick to set the bar a little higher,
“is he a first round draft pick absolutely. I know what a franchise quarterback looks like I’ve represented over a hundred quarterbacks and 60 first rounders and the very first pick of the draft eight different years and this is the one we thought was special this year.”
Pat turned to head coach Kliff Kingsbury for help with the decision.
Mahomes said his former coach gave him this piece of advice, “sell out be a pro either way don’t take anything for granted go out there and really really train to be an NFL quarterback at college or the NFL and you get a slight chance in the NFL and to be ready whenever your time comes.”
Now it’s time to move on, number five’s departure leaves the Texas Tech football program at a crossroads heading into 2017. Kliff Kingsbury is on the hot seat, with no answer as to who’s going to be under center this fall.
