Texas Tech volleyball held its annual Red & Black scrimmage on Saturday evening at the United Supermarkets Arena, with the Red team picking up a 4-0 victory over the Black squad.
Red won in straight sets: 27-25, 25-13, 25-14 and 25-23.
The Red team amassed 63 kills, led by junior outside hitter Alyssa Ybanez’ 17 kills. Sophomores Sarah Redding & Katy Keenan each added 13 kills, to combine for 43 between the trio. Senior setter Marguerite Grubb played in all four sets, earning a double-double behind 45 assists and 11 digs. As libero, Reyn Akiu logged 24 digs and five assists for the Red team.
On the other side of the net, freshman Michelle Irvin posted 11 kills to lead the Black team’s offense. Sophomore Kyndal Cowan and freshman Sophia Canales each dished out double digit assists, putting up 19 and 12, respectively. Freshmen Maggie Sagers (11) and Kylie Rittimann (10) also recorded double digit digs.
The Red squad swept the four sets, but had all they could handle from the Black team in the first and fourth periods of play. The first frame was controlled early by the Red team, but would become knotted up at 15 halfway through, and would stay even until getting into extras, where Red was able to pull way for a 27-25 victory.
The middle sets were paced by strong spurts from the Red team, as they claimed 25-13 and 25-14 victories. The final frame was similar to the opening set, with Red holding a decent lead until the Black team came back to tie it at 19, and took a short lead, before the Red squad closed it out, 25-23.
Texas Tech heads to Portland, Oregon, for the Portland State Tournament, where they’ll take on Colorado on Aug. 26, followed by Long Beach State and Portland State on Aug. 27.
