Freshman point guard Chrislyn Carr was named the 2019 Big 12 Freshman of the Year after a very impressive rookie season with the Lady Raiders.
Carr is the first Lady Raiders to win the award since current assistant coach @egrant14 in 2003. Plenette Pierson won the award in 2000. https://t.co/mIxYG9uGM8— David Collier (@CollieronTV) March 6, 2019
Carr became just the third Lady Raider freshman to win the award in school history and the first since in 2003.
Carr was also awarded a spot on the Big 12 All-Freshman team and was the only freshman named to the All-Big 12 Honorable Mention Team.
The freshman from Davenport, Iowa, has averaged 17.7 points per game this season and has scored 20+points in seven games so far. She has scored a total of 517 points this season, just 19 points away from the third most points scored by a freshman in a single season.
Carr is the leading freshman in the NCAA in five statistical categories including points per game (17.7) and total points (517).
Carr was named Big 12 Freshman of the Week five times this season, the most since the 2010-11 season. Following a huge performance at Nevada, Carr was named the USBWA National Freshman of the Week. Carr became the first Lady Raider in program history and seventh Big 12 player to earn the award.
Carr wrote her name into the records book with a career night at Nevada (12/15). The rookie scored 35 points, becoming the first Lady Raider to score 35+points since 2016. She broke the school record for the most 3-pt attempts in a game with 21. The previous record (a 24-year old record) was set by Noel Johnson who had 13 attempts in three games during the 1993-94 season. Carr tied a school record for the most 3-pt makes in a game with nine. The previous record (a 14-year old record) was set by Alesha Robertson who had nine makes against Miami on Dec. 6, 2004.
Junior Brittany Brewer was named to the All-Big 12 Honorable Mention team along with Carr.
Brewer is averaging 16.0 points per game and has racked up 13 double doubles this season, ranking in the Top 25 in the country and leading the Big 12.
The junior from Abilene, Texas, has tallied 61 blocks so far this season and has 152 career blocks
which ranks No. 6 in school history, just two blocks behind Stacey Siebert (86-90) who had 154 blocks in her career.
Earlier this season, Brewer was named Big 12 Co-Player of the Week after averaging 25 points per game and 11 rebounds per game.
Brewer was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team for the second straight year. She is just the third Lady Raider in school history to earn the award and the first to earn it in back-to-back seasons. She was also one of four Lady Raiders named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team. It is the second straight year Brewer has earned a spot on the league academic teams.
