Fields Collects Big 12 Newcomer of the Week Honors

Texas Tech redshirt freshman defensive back DaMarcus Fields was recognized as the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week on Monday for his play last weekend against No. 15 Oklahoma State.

Fields’ selection marks the third-straight week a Red Raider has earned a Big 12 weekly award as Ja’Deion High was named the Special Teams Player of the Week on Sept. 18 while Dakota Allen garnered the top defensive award on Sept. 25.

Fields, a native of Taylor, Texas, sparked the Red Raiders early in their primetime tilt against Oklahoma State as he put Texas Tech on the board via a 95-yard interception return for a touchdown. The interception was the first of Fields’ career.

Fields’ pick-six is believed to be the longest interception return for a touchdown by a Red Raider since Ring of Honor member Dave Parks set the school record after scoring off a 98-yard return against Colorado in 1962.

The interception marked the second-straight week Fields has caused a turnover as he forced and then recovered a fumble on a punt return in the final moments of Tech’s win at Houston. Fields is responsible for two of Tech’s 10 turnovers already this season.

In addition to his interception, Fields also notched a career-high five tackles along with a pass breakup in what was just his second career start in the secondary. He has recorded seven of his nine tackles this season in the last two weeks alone.

Fields and the Red Raiders continue Big 12 play this Saturday when Tech looks to rebound from its first loss of the season at Kansas. Kickoff is slated for 11 a.m. with television coverage provided nationally on FOX Sports 1.
