Texas Tech baseball’s Steven Gingery has been tabbed as a semifinalist for the USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award, it was announced today.

The Golden Spikes Award is given to the top amateur baseball player in the United States and is presented in partnership with the Rod Dedeaux Foundation.

USA Baseball officials will announce the finalists for the 2017 Golden Spikes Award on Wednesday, June 14. To select the finalists, the list of semifinalists is set to a voting body consisting of past Golden Spikes Award winners, past USA Baseball National Team coaches and press officers, members of the media that closely follow the amateur game, select professional baseball personnel, and select current USA Baseball staff, representing a group of more than 200 voters in total. As part of the selection process, all voters will be asked to choose three players from the list of semifinalists. Voting will be open until Friday, June 9.

Fan voting will once again be part of the Golden Spikes Award in 2017. This announcement officially marks the opening of voting for amateur baseball fans from across the country on GoldenSpikesAward.com – the online home of the award, powered by MLB Advanced Media (MLBAM).

Gingery is one of seven Red Raiders all-time to be among nominees for the award and the first since Trey Masek in 2013. In 1995 & 1997, Clint Bryant & Joe Dillon were finalists for the honor, respectively.

Sophomore left-handed pitcher Gingery has had a strong second year in the scarlet & black. The Huntington Beach, California, native is 9-1 over 14 starts in 2017. His nine victories rank 20th in the NCAA and is one away from the ninth spot all-time in the Texas Tech record books.

After the second week of the year, Gingery was named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week, while also garnering midseason All-America honors from D1 Baseball and Perfect Game early in April. On April 12, he was named to the Golden Spikes Award Midseason watch list and was later honored at the Big 12 Pitcher of the Year and a unanimous first team All-Big 12 award winner on May 23. Earlier today, he was named a finalist for the College Baseball Foundation’s Pitcher of the Year accolade.

The No. 5 Red Raiders open postseason play at home in front of a sold out Rip Griffin Park on Friday, June 2, at 2 p.m. against Delaware.
