Texas Tech baseball’s Gabe Holt has been named a Perfect Game/Rawlings First Team Freshman All-American, the publication announced today.
It is the third consecutive year and the fifth time in six seasons the Red Raiders have been represented with a Freshman All-American, totaling eight honorees since 2013. Holt joins Eric Gutierrez (2013), Jarrard Poteete (2013), Dylan Dusek (2014), Stephen Smith (2014), Steven Gingery (2016), Davis Martin (2016) and Josh Jung (2017) as winners from the publication under head coach Tim Tadlock. It is also Holt’s third freshman accolade, as he earned the award from Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA).
Holt, the Bonaire, Georgia, native has started all 62 games this season, totaling 90 hits, including 13 doubles, three triples and six homers. He also has 41 RBI and 68 runs to go with 29 stolen bases.
He’s totaled 29 multi-hit games this season, which ranks second on the team, including eight games with three knocks. He also has 12 multi-RBI contests while producing the longest reached-base safely streak of the year, doing so in each of the first 29 games of the 2018 campaign.
Holt was honored earlier this season by the league coaches as Big 12 Freshman of the Year, the second-straight accolade by a Red Raider and sixth in school history. He also earned First Team All-Big 12 and was a unanimous selection to the All-Freshman squad.
Holt and the Red Raiders return to action on Sunday, June 17, at 6 p.m., against Florida in their first game of the 2018 NCAA College World Series at T.D. Ameritrade Park in Omaha.
Texas Tech baseball’s Josh Jung and Grant Little picked up their fifth All-America awards on Thursday, this time with second team honors from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA).
The Red Raider duo has also been recognized by Collegiate Baseball, Baseball America, Perfect Game & D1 Baseball. It’s the first time since 1999 Tech has had two distinctions from the NCBWA, when Josh Bard & Shane Wright earned the accolades. The Red Raiders have tallied 34 All-America awards from the publication since 1993.
Jung, the third baseman from San Antonio, leads the team in several offensive categories heading into the College World Series, topping the squad in batting average. He also paces the Red Raiders in hits (92), RBI (78) and runs scored (68). Jung leads the conference in each of those categories, while ranking fourth in the country in RBI.
Earlier this season, Jung recorded the program’s first cycle in a decade, making him the sixth Red Raider to do so. His was the first to do it with a 5-for-5 day at the plate, with two homers, totaling eight RBI.
Little, an outfielder from Midland, has also started all 62 games of the year and trails only Jung or Holt on offense both on the team & in the Big 12. He heads into the CWS with 87 hits, 73 RBI and 61 runs to go with a team-high 24 doubles and 12 homers.
Little also made history this year, throwing down the team’s only nine-RBI performance of the year and third in school history. He rattled off two homers, including a grand slam along with two other base hits, to become the first Red Raider since 1984 with nine RBI in a game. He also had the first five-hit game of the year at Louisville on March 13 and launched two dingers again at Oklahoma State on May 18.
The Red Raiders open the NCAA College World Series on Sunday, June 17, against Florida at 6 p.m. on ESPN2 at T.D. Ameritrade Park in Omaha.
