Texas Tech held off a second half-run from Texas to eliminate the Longhorns, 73-69, at the Big 12 Championships Thursday in Kansas City.
The 14th-ranked Red Raiders hit seven first half three pointers to lead 35-28 at the break, and Keenan Evans would add to it early in the second.
The senior guard scored seven straight points to extend Texas Tech’s lead to 12 points, but Texas had an answer.
Jacob Young scored 12 straight points to help Texas pull within two at 54-52. Young was 6-for-6 from three-point range and finished with 29 points, but it wasn’t enough.
Evans and Zhaire Smith scored 15 of Texas Tech’s final 16 points.
Evans finished with a team-high 25 points and Smith added eight.
Jarrett Culver scored the first seven points of the game and finished with 13.
The Red Raiders await the winner of West Virginia and Baylor at 8 p.m. Friday at the Sprint Center.
