Texas Tech baseball’s Josh Jung was named to the 2018 Bobby Bragan Collegiate Slugger Award Watch List, the Bobby Bragan Youth Foundation announced.
The BBCSA is based on performance at the plate, academics and personal integrity, as nominations were open to all Division-I baseball programs in Texas. Last season, Texas Tech senior third baseman Hunter Hargrove was awarded the inaugural honor by the foundation.
Jung, a sophomore infielder from San Antonio, was one of 25 student-athletes named to the watch list. In 2017, he started in all 62 games at third base for the Red Raiders in 2017. He compiled a .306 average at the plate, racking up 75 hits, including 14 doubles, two triples and six homers. He also recorded 43 RBI and 55 runs scored, one off the team-best mark, which was also second in the Big 12.
He capped the year with a team-high 24 multi-hit performances, which included six three-hit bids and one four-hit game against Oklahoma State on April 21. He finished third among Red Raiders in multi-RBI games, putting together four days with three and one with four. From March 18 to April 30, he reached base safely in 29-straight games, the first Red Raider to do so since 2015.
Jung turned a strong conference slate into a Big 12 Freshman of the Year award, a second team All-Big 12 honor and a unanimous All-Big 12 Freshman nod. During conference play, Jung put together a .351/.543/.456 line with 33 hits, 15 RBI and 25 runs. He led Tech in runs and was second in hits by one during the 24-game Big 12 schedule. He also picked up four freshman All-America accolades for his 2017 performance.
Jung and the Red Raiders are set to open the 2018 campaign on Friday, Feb. 16, against Maine, at 2 p.m. at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park
