Lady Raider Basketball Head Coach Marlene Stollings added 6-5 California standout Emma Merriweather to the 2018-19 roster on Thursday.
Merriweather is a post from Buena Park, Calif. She comes to Lubbock after playing her freshman season at Long Beach State. She chose Texas Tech over South Carolina and Virginia. Merriweather will sit out this season due to NCAA transfer rules.
“Emma is an incredible signee for the future of Lady Raider basketball. She is a versatile post who can run the floor, score around the basket and from the outside,” Stollings said. “Her instincts to block shots and rebound are elite. Emma’s ceiling is very high and she has the potential to be a dominant force in the Big 12. We are ecstatic to have her join the Lady Raider movement.”
In her rookie season, Merriweather played in all 31 games and made 19 starts. She averaged 8.6 points per game and shot .496 from the field. She also averaged 6.4 rebounds per game and had a team-leading 54 blocks on the season. While playing for the 49ers, Merriweather posted five double-doubles including a 20-point, 17-rebound night against UC Riverside.
“I’m blessed to have an opportunity to come be a Lady Raider and be coached by the staff at Texas Tech,” Merriweather said. “It’s still unreal that I found a place that had everything I was looking for and more. I cannot wait to get to school and start practicing to prepare for the years ahead.”
Merriweather was a four-year letterwinner at Lakeside High School in Lake Elsinore, Calif. She still holds the school record for blocked shots and earned All-League, All-State, All-Area and All-CIF honors during her career.
