Another tough fourth quarter troubled the Lady Raiders as Texas Tech fell in a heartbreaker to West Virginia, 75-72, on Wednesday.

Texas Tech drops to 11-13 on the season, 2-11 in Big 12 play. The Mountaineers improve to 17-6 on the season and 8-4 in Big 12 play.

West Virginia started the game with a 50 percent shooting average from the field and a 24-19 lead. The Lady Raiders battled back in the second quarter to pull within four heading into the half.

The Lady Raiders came out with a hot third quarter and outscored the Mountaineers, 24-15, to take over the lead. Tech shot 52 percent from the field while holding the Mountaineers to 31 percent. Freshman Chrislyn Carr led the charge during the period with nine points off four field goals and a three-pointer.

Texas Tech headed into the final period with a 59-54 lead.

West Virginia went on an 8-3 run to open the fourth quarter, tying the game at 62-62. The two continued to battle back and forth.

The Lady Raiders led 72-71 with just 1:23 to go after Naomi Davenport hit a layup. The Mountaineers took the 73-72 lead with just 11 seconds on the clock, forcing Head Coach Marlene Stollings to call her final timeout. But an in-bounds pass to the basket was tipped by Madisen Smith and freshman Chrislyn Carr was forced to use her final foul on Tynice Martin. Martin extended West Virginia’s lead, making both of her free throws.

The Lady Raiders had eight seconds to tie the game with a three-pointer, but Sydney Goodson’s late shot missed the basket, handing the win to the Mountaineers.

TOP PERFORMERS

Texas Tech: Four Lady Raiders scored in double figures against West Virginia. Chrislyn Carr and Sydney Goodson led the team with 15 point apiece. Angel Hayden and Erin DeGrate followed with 12 points each. DeGrate posted her third double double of the season and fourth of her career with 11 rebounds and 12 points.

 

West Virginia: The Mountaineers had four players in double figures. Madisen Smith led the way with 20 points while Naomi Davenport followed with 18 points and eight rebounds. Tynice Martin tallied 16 points while Nia Staples added 11 points to the Mountaineers’ total.

·       Sophomore guard Sydney Goodson recorded 15 points and four steals marking her 14th double-digit point game of the season. She hit a career high five three-pointers in the contest and tied her career high in steals.

·       Junior Center Erin DeGrate recorded her third double double of the season and fourth of her career with 12 points and 11 rebounds. DeGrate’s 12 points marked her 10th double digit point game of the season and 20th of her career. Her 11 rebounds tonight marked her 4th double-digit rebound game of the season and 5th of her career.
