Another successful season came to an end as the No. 11 Texas Tech Women’s Tennis team fell to No. 3 Duke, 4-1, in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships on Saturday.
Texas Tech (23-7) wrapped up another historic season after advancing to the Elite Eight for the second straight season. The Lady Raiders defeated conference rival Texas, 4-1, in the Round of 16 on Thursday.
“It’s obviously not the outcome we were looking for, but I am so proud to have coached these young ladies. The fight in them is second to none,” Head Coach Todd Petty said. “This senior class had an unbelievable career and laid a legacy that will be hard to beat.”
Duke (27-3) advanced to the first Final Four since 2012 and will face the winner between Georgia and Stanford.
The Lady Raiders opened the match clinching the doubles point with wins on courts one and two. No. 28 Sarah Dvorak and Sabrina Federici took down No. 9 Kaitlyn McCarthy and Ellyse Hamlin, 6-3, giving Tech the advantage.
Duke’s Meible Chi and Hannah Zhao tied the doubles play with a 6-4 victory on court three. Doubles duo Felicity Maltby and Gabriela Talaba took down No. 6 Kelly Chen and Samantha Harris, 7-5, marking their highest ranked win of the season.
Duke went on to capture four singles matches and punch their ticket to the semifinals. When the match was suspended, Gabriela Talaba had forced a third match with her 6-3 win in the second set against No. 6 Samantha Harris.
