The No. 3 Texas Tech baseball team posted a 14-2 victory over No. 11 South Alabama in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
The Red Raiders (11-0) put together a 16-hit performance against the Jaguars (7-4), as a season-high seven Tech players recorded multi-hit bids at the plate.
Senior Michael Davis, juniors Cody Farhat & Cameron Warren, sophomores Josh Jung & Grant Little and freshman Gabe Holt all tallied two hits in the contest. Warren & Davis also had four & three RBI each, respectively, while both scoring two runs.
Sophomore right-hander John McMillon started on the mound for the Red Raiders in the first game of the doubleheader. The Jasper native put together a 5.0 inning performance to improve to 3-0 this season. He struck out five and gave up just two runs on three hits, walking six.
Tech got another strong showing from the bullpen, as sophomore RHP Caleb Kilian & junior RHP Nick Candelari worked the final 4.0 frames, combining for one hit, one walk and five strikeouts.
The Jaguars put the first run of the day on the board with two outs in the first inning. After a walk to Swaggerty, Donovan hit an RBI double to the gap in left-center field for the 1-0 lead.
The advantage wouldn’t last long as sophomore designated hitter Brian Klein roped a single to right field with one out, scoring Holt, who began the frame with a single, to even up the score. With Jung & Klein in scoring position, a passed ball as Little drew a walk scored Jung & moved Klein up to third, who was later driven by a sacrifice fly from Warren to give Tech a 3-1 lead.
It was the 10th time in 11 games the Red Raiders have scored at least three runs in a single inning, but would be the first of three times Tech would record crooked numbers in the contest.
Tech plated four more in the next frame to push the advantage to 7-1. Wilson & Jung both reached via HBP & single, then a two-out walk to Little loaded the bases for Davis, who drilled a two-RBI single up the middle for the 5-1 advantage. Warren & Farhat followed with nearly identical singles through the left side of the infield, both driving in a run to extend the lead to 7-1.
In the fourth, the Jaguars got one back, as Sandle scored on a wild pitch after walking to begin the inning and moving around on a single & groundout to cut the deficit to 7-2.
A few frames later, Farhat rocketed his first homer of thae year over the left field wall to make it 8-2.
In the next frame, Tech plated six more to move ahead, 14-2. Four-straight hits from a pinch-hitting Parker Kelly (single), Little (double), Davis (single) and Warren (double) produced three more runs for the Red Raiders. With the bases loaded, freshman KC Simonich delivered a two-RBI, pinch-hit single to center field to push the lead to 13-2. A wild pitch with the bases loaded capped the six-run inning for Tech, increasing the lead to its final score at 14-2.
