The No. 3 Texas Tech baseball team fell in game one of its midweek series at No. 7 Arkansas, 5-1, on Tuesday night at Baum Stadium.
Despite posting six shutout frames to end the night, the Red Raiders (32-10) couldn’t overcome five runs by the Razorbacks (29-13) over the first two innings of the contest. Tech finished the night with one run on four hits, with freshman Gabe Holt accounting for two of the team’s knocks. The Red Raiders left five on base.
Sophomore right-handed pitcher Ryan Sublette made his sixth start of the season on Tuesday, going 2.1 innings for the Red Raiders. He finished the night with five runs allowed, four earned, on seven hits, with a walk & two strikeouts.
Senior left-hander Dylan Dusek worked a strong 2.2 innings of relief to keep the game at four runs. Dusek allowed just three hits and struck out one, stranding two in scoring position in his final inning of work with a strikeout & lineout. Fellow senior RHP Jose Quezada followed with 2.0 shutout frames of his own, allowing just one baserunner and striking out two.
Arkansas struck first in the bottom of the first inning, plating three for an early 3-0 lead. With the bases loaded, a single from Fletcher brought in the first run of the night, then a HBP to Gates made it 2-0. Holt would trade a run for an out, fielding a 4-3 double play to erase two. A liner would end the inning, but the Razorbacks would start the game with a 3-0 advantage.
UA added two more in the next trip to the plate on a pair of two-out singles from Bonfield and Fletcher to make it 5-0.
The Red Raiders got on the board in the third inning thanks to an RBI single from sophomore Brian Klein. His knock to right field scored Holt, who began the frame with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch.
The Red Raiders and Razorbacks conclude the two-game set on Wednesday, April 25, at 6 p.m. from Baum Stadium on SEC Network.
