The No. 8 Texas Tech baseball team got back in the win column with an 11-6 victory over San Diego on Tuesday afternoon at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.

The Red Raiders (34-12) battled back from behind twice against the Toreros (20-25) to win their fifth-straight over the club. Tech used 11 runs on 13 hits to erase deficits in the first & sixth innings to improve to 23-5 against non-conference opponents and 7-3 in midweek matchups.

Five Red Raiders put together multi-hit bids at the plate, with senior Zach Rheams tallying his fourth three-hit game of the year. Junior Cameron Warren, sophomores Josh Jung & Grant Little and freshman Gabe Holt all had two hits against San Diego.

Freshman right-handed pitcher Ryan Sublette got the start on Tuesday and matched a season-high with 3.2 innings pitched against the Toreros. He allowed two runs on seven hits, walking three with three strikeouts. Sophomore RHP Caleb Freeman picked up the win after working 2.0 frames, with no earned runs allowed and three strikeouts.

San Diego plated the first run of the game in the opening frame. A bases-loaded, RBI groundout from Gardner brought in Kunst after his lead-off walk for a 1-0 lead. In the next frame, Tech answered back with two of their own, scoring both on wild pitches. Holt began the Tech half with a single, then found his way home on a wild pitch during Jung’s at-bat. After a Little double put two in scoring position, another wild pitch during Rheams’ plate appearance scored Jung for the 2-1 Red Raider lead.

USD would tie the game in the second inning on a fielder’s choice from Kunst, scoring Houghtby, who singled to begin the frame. Tech got the lead back in the bottom of the inning, as junior Zayne Willems cracked a one-out double to the gap in right-center field, scoring junior Cody Farhat to make it a 3-2 game. Willems moved to third on a groundout & scored on Jung’s RBI single to right field to push the lead to 4-2.

After a scoreless third, Tech added another run to make it a 5-2 game. A single from sophomore Brian Klein was fulfilled by a triple from Jung to the right-center field wall for the insurance run and Jung’s second RBI of the day.

In the sixth, San Diego plated four unearned runs, getting life on a two-out error and capitalizing with back-to-back doubles, the first with the bases loaded and the second to clear the other two runners to take a 6-5 lead.

Just like the first inning, Tech countered to re-take the lead in the sixth, this time on a two-run homer from Little. After Jung walked to begin the frame, Little uncorked his 10th dinger of the year to center field to push Tech ahead, 7-6.

It was the 60th homer of the year in 46 games, matching last year’s total of 60 through 62 contests.

In their next trip to the plate, the Red Raiders rattled off three more runs to extend the lead to 10-6. Rheams brought in the first run of the frame with a double off the left field wall, then Warren sent an RBI single to left field for another run and freshman Cody Masters capped the three-run frame with a sacrifice fly. An RBI groundout from Klein after a triple from Holt plated another to bring the score to its final at 11-6.

The Red Raiders continue their home stand against No. 18 Texas with a three-game set on May 4-6 at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
