Texas Tech volleyball junior setter Missy Owens has been named to the 2017 All-Big 12 Second Team, the league office announced Monday.

Owens is the first Red Raider setter to be recognized on an All-Big 12 team since Lisa Hilgers in 1998. Overall, Tech has had a player receive All-Big 12 accolades each of the last five seasons, including four straight years with a second-team selection.

“I’m really happy for Missy and proud of what she’s accomplished this season,” head coach Tony Graystone said. “She’s had a tremendous year, and it’s great for her to be recognized. But beyond what she’s done on the court for us, Missy has been a key part of our rebuild and improving the culture and expectations for Tech volleyball. We ask a lot of Missy, and she gives us her very best every day.”

A native of Yorba Linda, Calif., Owens was one of four Big 12 setters to tally over 10.00 assists per set, averaging 10.79 in her first season at Texas Tech after transferring from Long Beach State. Under the direction of Owens, Tech’s offense recorded a full one-kill more per set from 2016 and a .011 improvement in the team hitting percentage. Owens finished the regular season with 1025 assists, 111 kills and 212 digs while notching 10 double-doubles to finish second on the team.

“It’s an honor and privilege to play in the Big 12,” Owens said. “I am grateful for the opportunity to be a part of this program and to be able to make an impact right away. I am surrounded by teammates and coaches who push me every day, and I’m excited to be a part of growing this program.”

Owens and three other Red Raiders have been nominated for American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-Region awards, which will be revealed on Tuesday, Dec. 5.
