No. 7 Texas Tech baseball’s Cameron Warren and Dylan Neuse have been named Big 12 Player and Newcomer of the Week, respectively, the league office announced today.
It’s the first honor of each kind for both Red Raider student-athletes. It marks the third-straight year Tech has had a duo earn Player and Newcomer of the Week awards in the same week prior to Big 12 play. Junior Josh Jung and Holt captured the awards last season while Jung and Hunter Hargrove took home the same accolades in 2017.
Warren, a senior first baseman from Midwest City, Okla., led the Big 12 this week with three home runs and 13 RBI, while ranking third in batting at .500. He hit a home run in three-straight games, starting with a clutch grand slam with two outs in the top of the ninth on Wednesday at San Diego State that put Tech on top 12-9. Warren tallied a hit in all five games, crossed home eight times on the week and added five walks.
In Wednesday’s seesaw affair at SDSU, Warren came up big with the Red Raiders trailing a run and down to their final out. He mashed a grand slam over the wall in left center, sending Tech to the 12-9 victory. Warren followed that with a solo homer in Friday’s series opener with Wichita State before connecting on a three-run blast in the first inning of Saturday’s 15-10 win.
Neuse, a sophomore outfielder from Fort Worth, Texas, hit .450 over the week with six of his nine hits going for extra bases. He recorded two home runs over the week, along with a pair of triples and two doubles, to lead the league in total bases with 21. He led the league in runs scored with 11, ranked second in the league in hits and RBI with nine, and tied for the league-lead with three stolen bases.
On Wednesday, he homered and double while tallying a career-high four runs scored. He was intentionally walked in the ninth to help set up Warren’s grand slam. In Saturday’s contest, he came a double shy of the cycle and answered a six-run WSU fifth with a three-run home run that put Tech back in the lead at 12-10. On Sunday, he compiled his sixth multi-hit game of the season with a triple and three runs scored.
The Red Raiders open Big 12 play this weekend with a top-10 showdown at No. 9 Texas. Friday’s first pitch from UFCU Disch-Falk Field is slated for 6:30 p.m. on Longhorn Network.
