Texas Tech sophomore Sofia Garcia sank 10 birdies Tuesday en route to an 8-under-par 64 final round that pushed the Red Raiders to a second place finish at the BYU at Entrada Classic.

Garcia birdied seven of her first 10 holes on her way to breaking the previous 18-hole record set by current LPGA Tour standout Kim Kaufman in 2009. The strong round was part of a 7-under 281 combined scored for the Red Raiders that marked the lowest over the final 18 holes for the entire 15-team field.

“The team played hard today,” head coach JoJo Robertson said. “I’m proud of their effort and the way they fought during the final round. Sofia led the way with an incredible round. She started strong and never backed off. I’m excited to see how we build off of this performance later this week in Georgia.

Garcia, who closed the round with back-to-back birdies, finished in a tie for second individually, one stroke of medalist Thitapa Pakdeesettak of Kent State. The Golden Flashes also claimed the team title as their 4-under final round held off the Red Raiders by four strokes.

The performance marked the lowest round by a NCAA golfer this year, topping the previous low card of 65 that was set by Anna Backman of Miami in early February. Garcia moved up 20 spots on the individual leaderboard over the course of the day as her only blemish was a double bogey at the par-3 12th that

Fellow sophomore Louisa Brunt also had quite the tournament for the Red Raiders as she rattled off a 2-under round to finish in a tie for third place, the best finish in her still young Tech career.

Anna Dong concluded her final day by shooting a 2-over score as she finished at 3-over and tied for 11th place overall. Mami Yamamoto rounded out the scoring for the Red Raiders by notching a final round tally of 1-over, putting her in a tie for 21st place at 7-over for the tournament.

Amy Taylor also finished the event at 7-over as an individual representative, while Cecilie Nielsen placed in a tie for 40th following an 11-over performance. The Red Raiders were separated by 24 strokes from their nearest competitor in third place Idaho.

UP NEXT:

The Red Raiders will have a quick turnaround as they head to Augusta, Georgia to participate in the 2019 Valspar Augusta Invitational. Round one of the two-day tournament begins Saturday morning.
