Texas Tech baseball’s Steven Gingery, Hunter Hargrove and Orlando Garcia have been named to the 2017 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings All-Midwest Region teams, it was announced today.

Gingery was placed on the Midwest All-Region First Team, while Hargrove & Garcia garnered second team accolades. It is the first time each of the three Texas Tech student-athletes have been honored by the ABCA.

Tech’s three selections are the most Red Raiders to appear on the All-Region lists since Josh Bard, Keith Ginter and Shane Wright earned the nods in 1998. Tech has had seven Red Raiders appear on the ABCA/Rawlings All-Region teams under head coach Tim Tadlock and his staff.

First Team ABCA/Rawlings All-Region honorees are nominated for ABCA/Rawlings All-America honors, which will be announced on Saturday, June 17.

Gingery, who’s 2017 trophy case is filling up, is the first Red Raider pitcher to earn first team honors since the team designations began in 2001. In his second season in the scarlet & black, Gingery was masterful on the mound, racking up a 10-1 record over 15 starts. Through 91.1 innings, he allowed only 21 runs, 16 earned, for an ERA of 1.58. He struck out a team-best 107, while holding opposing batters to a measly .186 at the plate.

The Huntington Beach, California, native’s 10 victories marked back-to-back seasons a Red Raider pitcher has hit double-digit win totals, as Davis Martin accomplished the feat in 2016. It was also the 10th time Tech has had pitchers register 10-win seasons in consecutive years. The win total also ranks 10th in the NCAA in 2017 and is tied for ninth all-time at Texas Tech.

Gingery’s ERA of 1.58 is the lowest since Corey Taylor’s NCAA-best 0.31 in 2015. Gingery’s mark is the sixth-lowest in school history in a single season and is eighth in the country this year.

After throwing eight strikeouts against Sam Houston State on June 3, Gingery (107) became the first Red Raider to push past the 100-strikeout threshold in a season since Chad Bettis (102) in 2010. In doing so, Gingery’s 107 punch outs were the most at Tech in a season since Monty Ward rung up a school-record 151 batters in 1998.

Hargrove, from Mansfield, led the Red Raiders with a .343 batting average in 2017. He also held the team’s top marks in hits (84), doubles (26) and runs (56), while also driving in 51 RBI.

His 26 doubles were the tied for fifth-most in a single season by a Red Raider, matching Clint Bryant in 1996. His total also led the Big 12 and ranked third in the NCAA this season. The Big 12 Player of the Year’s hit figures and runs scored numbers both placed second among conference competition this year.

Hargrove put together the team’s longest hitting streak with over 15 games from the start of the season on Feb. 17 to March 10, tallying 22 hits during that stretch. He would do it again from April 26 to June 2, recording 23 knocks during that time. Hargrove also ended the year with 18-straight games reaching base safely, beginning on the April 26 game at New Mexico.

He came one multi-hit game shy of the team-best, putting up 23, which featured seven three-hit games and two four-hit bids. He also finished second in multi-RBI performances with 14, with five instances of three-RBI days, two games with four and one with six against California on Feb. 26.

Garcia, a native of El Paso, cranked 13 home runs among his 67 hits, along with 62 RBI and 42 runs for a .305/.550/.386 line at the plate in 2017. He recorded 20 multi-hit games and a team-best 17 multi-RBI contests, which included six three-RBI performances, two games with four and one seven-RBI bid against New Mexico State on Feb. 21 as a part of a four-hit day.

His 13 dingers were the second time in as many seasons a Red Raider had hit 13, joining Eric Gutierrez, and the fourth-straight year a Tech student-athlete had launched 10 or more. On two separate occasions, Garcia polished off two-homer games, the first against NMSU on Feb. 21, and the second in conference play against Baylor on April 9.

Garcia finished the year ranked second in the Big 12 in homers (13) & RBI (62), and fourth in slugging percentage (.550). He was also an unanimous All-Big 12 First Team honoree.

Garcia (15th round) & Hargrove (25th round) were also selected on the third day of the 2017 MLB Draft on Wednesday afternoon by the San Francisco Giants & Oakland Athletics, respectively.
