No. 3 Texas Tech baseball’s Grant Little and Ryan Shetter have been named Big 12 Player & Pitcher of the Week, respectively, the league announced today.
It is the 11th overall award won by a Red Raider in the 14 weeks of release this season. It’s also the third time Tech teammates have picked up two of the three awards in the same week, joining Hunter Hargrove & Josh Jung on Feb. 21 and Hargrove & Brian Klein on May 1.
On March 27, Little earned Newcomer of the Week honors, as the Player of the Week nod makes him the first freshman to win the award since 2012.
A total of nine different Red Raiders have secured a weekly accolade from the Big 12 in 2017: Michael Davis (April 17), Orlando Garcia (April 10), Tanner Gardner (March 13), Steven Gingery (Feb. 27), Hunter Hargrove (Feb. 21 & May 1), Josh Jung (Feb. 21), Brian Klein (May 1), Grant Little (March 27 & May 22) and Ryan Shetter (May 22).
Little racked up nine hits over three games last week in the sweep of Kansas. Six of his nine knocks were doubles, including a three-double day in the finale against the Jayhawks. It was the second time this season a Red Raider had recorded three in a single game. All three days at the plate included multi-hit bids and multi-run performances, while driving in at least one RBI in each.
On the mound, Shetter was electric, fanning a career-high 11 Jayhawks over 7.0 frames of work on Friday night. He gave up just one run on three hits in his 13th start of the year, without allowing a walk. It was the second time this year to record 10 or more strikeouts and the fifth time to hold his opponent to one or fewer runs.
The Red Raiders return to action at the 2017 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship on Wednesday, May 24, as Tech enters the tournament as the one seed against Oklahoma State at 12:30 p.m. at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
