KAMC’s Red Raider Nation can confirm that Texas Tech redshirt freshman quarterback, Jett Duffey, has returned to the Texas Tech football team after serving a suspension that ended on Saturday, August 12, 2017.
Duffey was suspended by the university for the 2017 spring and summer semesters after a Title IX hearing panel sided with a woman who alleged that Duffey had sex with her twice when she was too incapacitated to consent. The story was first reported by the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal.
However, a Lubbock grand jury decided there was not sufficient cause to criminally prosecute the case.
Texas Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury said that Duffey did not scrimmage with the team this Saturday, and will be given a few days in a helmet to get back in the groove of things.
Kingsbury believes that even with the short time before the season, Duffey should be able to push fellow backup McLane Carter for the No. 2 role.
“I feel comfortable with where it’s heading. He’s improved dramatically, McLane has, since the spring,” Kingsbury said. “I think Jett will come in and he’s been working hard – he’s got to get back into the groove and rhythm – but we’ve got three weeks with him before our first game. So I feel comfortable that by week one, we’re going to have a guy that we’d feel great about putting in and executing our offense.”
The Texas Tech football team will be releasing a new roster on Monday afternoon.
If you remember, Duffey was the Class-5A Texas Football Player of the Year, leading Mansfield Lakeridge all the way to the 5A Division-1 State Title game against George Ranch.
Kingsbury fully expects him to compete for the backup role.
