Texas Tech will host a groundbreaking ceremony Friday afternoon to commence construction on the Dustin R. Womble Basketball Center in the City Bank Room of United Supermarkets Arena. This facility is another milestone for The Campaign for Fearless Champions.

The formal program will begin at 1:30 p.m. with statements by both Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt and President Lawrence Schovanec. The ceremony will move at 2 p.m. to the future site of the Dustin R. Womble Basketball Center, which will be located directly across from United Supermarkets Arena on Indiana Avenue.

“We look forward to breaking ground on what will be one of the premier basketball facilities in the country,” Hocutt said. “This will be a great day to look into our future and what this facility will provide for our men’s and women’s basketball student-athletes. It is also a great opportunity to thank the Womble family and the many others who have generously supported this project.”

Both the Texas Tech men’s and women’s basketball programs will move their day-to-day operations to the Womble Basketball Center following its completion. It will also house coaches’ offices, athletic training facilities and strength and conditioning areas for both programs.

The Womble Basketball Center represents another success of The Campaign for Fearless Champions, which has revitalized Texas Tech’s athletic facilities through philanthropic gifts. The campaign has already been responsible for the state-of-the-art Sports Performance Center that opened in the fall of 2017 along with renovations to United Supermarkets Arena and Jones AT&T Stadium.

The groundbreaking ceremony is open to the public and fans are asked to enter the arena by using the southwest doors beginning at 1 p.m. Friday. Parking will be available in the lots immediately to the north of United Supermarkets Arena.

The entire program leading into the formal groundbreaking will be streamed live for free on TexasTech.TV as well as on Texas Tech’s official Roku and Apple TV apps.
