Houston entered the game with the highly touted defense that was allowing just under 10 points a game but Texas Tech took that title away from the Cougars in the Red Raiders 27-24 win over Houston on Saturday.
Three plays into the game, Texas Tech’s Dakota Allen picked off a Kyle Allen pass to give the Red Raiders the ball deep in Houston territory.
The Red Raiders settle for a field goal. It would be the only points Texas Tech would get from three Houston turnovers in the first half.
Texas Tech jumped in front 13-0 early in the 2nd quarter on Desmond Nisby’s first career rushing touchdown.
Houston picked up three on the ensuing drive then capitalized on Nic Shimonek’s first interception of the season with an 18-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Allen to D’Eriq King to make it 13-10.
In the 3rd quarter, the Red Raider defense picked up where it left off when Jordyn Brooks intercepted Allen’s pass deep in Texas Tech territory.
Trey King broke a 73-yard run on the next play but Texas Tech would get no points on the drive when Michael Ewton missed his 2nd field goal attempt of the game.
Texas Tech would get on the board on their next possession in just two plays. Shimonek finds KeKe Coutee for 77-yards and a 20-10 lead.
After forcing Houston to punt fourth time of the half, Justin Stockton broke an 84-yard run then scored two-plays on 20-yard touchdown catch to give the Red Raiders a 27-10 lead.
Texas Tech adds a fifth turnover in the final minutes. It’s the most since the Red Raiders had five against Kansas in 2008.
Houston would score a touchdown with 15 seconds remaining bu the Red Raiders hold on to snap Houston’s 16-game home winning streak.
Texas Tech improves to 3-0 with the win and now prepares to open Big 12 play against Oklahoma State at 7 p.m. Saturday September 30.
